Bills

Our Rating: 8.5/10
I’m sure you’ve heard the myths. The queues are long, it’s the best scrambled eggs in Sydney or it will set you back $50 a head for breakfast. After a visit to Bills on a grey Saturday morning, I can now dispel some of those myths.

Firstly — the queues. This one was a big reason why we hadn’t been here before. When we want to eat breakfast, that generally means we want to eat it straight away. After a quick call to the restaurant on Friday (Bill answered the phone – though was it really that Bill?!) we were assured that arriving before 9.30am can generally guarantee a seat straight away. So it was, that at 8.30am we found ourselves at the front door of Bills, and being offered a table. Actually, we were given our pick of tables to choose from with the waiter making the decision ours.

coffee at Bills Restaurant in DarlinghurstNext myth. The best scrambled eggs in Sydney. This is a big call though I’m inclined to actually agree with this one. The organic eggs are creamy though not too runny, and served with a crusty sourdough bread. I’m guessing the eggs are made with full fat cream and butter, and that only adds to the enjoyment. You can only order scrambled eggs and toast on their own for $12.80, and then any side dishes are extra. Sides include bacon, chipolatas, tomatoes, aged cheddar, mushrooms, avocado salsa and start from $3.50. I did find this a bit steep, as it elevates the cost to another level.

We were a group of four, and all went for the scrambled eggs, and then shared sides of bacon, chipolatas and sauted mushrooms. This was definitely satisfying enough, though having seen the ricotta hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter a group decision was made to order one and split it between the four of us. You could call this our breakfast dessert. The hotcakes are so light and just sweet enough.

Yes, the cost is high and it ended up costing us $33 each for breakfast. Though good service and great food will have us back again for more.
